From Our Team and for You

Is this the goal for future translators?

Do you like to text with lots of emojis? Have you ever wonder if you’re using them correctly? Have you gotten in trouble because you send lots of emojis? Or maybe too few of the? Do you feel like you need a translator to decode some text messages? If your answer was yes to any of these questions, this article might interest you.

Every millenial knows that texts message struggle we had with our parents and other adults, specially, because it wasn’t always about the words we used with them, but the “emojis” we sent in our texts. Back then, emojis used to be spelling signs combined with letters and numbers, and you had to read them sideways, something that our parents couldn’t always understand. We also needed to use our imagination to understand them, for example knowing that : ) is :).

The career of the future?

If you don’t like texting with lots of emojis when writing a text message, then you’ll be surprised by this. Translation agencies are already exploiting this market with the aim of improving the adaptation of these images into a target culture. That’s why, a London agency was the first to hire a translator specialized in emojis. This is a sign of modern times and it might as well be one of the careers of the future, since cultural adaptation is not something new to the translation industry and the use of images for instant messaging is increasing more and more. For example:

In Mexico, this emoji means “praying hands”, or this is the definition people gave to this icon, due to the catholic beliefs of the Mexican people. However, its creators designed it to be a “high five”.

Nowadays, 10 years later to be precise, we can even go to the movies and enjoy a film based on all of these new and old emojis. Do you think that this can become a translation field in the near future? Would you like to become an emoji translatorand get to know the culture of different countries to know if the images that we share are appropriate? Does your knowledge on these images is quite fluid? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you will probably have found a new field to develop in.
